Birth Control for Girls Attending Orlando Schools?

Well, it hasn't happened yet, but it can. According to those in the know, girls (and boys, by the way. It takes two to tango, after all!) are becoming sexually active at a much younger age than their parents did. This phenomenon is no different in Maine than for students in Orlando schools; but Maine school officials are proposing to do something about it by offering girls access to birth control pills. Should the officials of Orlando schools follow suit? That probably depends on how you see the world in regards to the sexuality of today's young people.

The Conservative Viewpoint

If your beliefs are traditionally conservative, you'd most likely say that Orlando schools' young teens aren't having sex; after all, the parents of Orlando schools' students would know about it if they did, right? If you fall on this side of the fence, it is also likely that you believe in abstinence for all who are unwed, especially teens attending Orlando schools. If parents of kids enrolled in Orlando schools were more in touch with their children's lives, they would be able to prevent them from having sex in the first place. Many conservative parents even choose to homeschool their children in lieu of enrolling them in Orlando schools in order to protect them from perceived bad influences of misguided peers. Lots of folks also feel that schools have no business dispensing such medications, and that it is an endorsement for teens to be sexually active.

How the Liberals See Things

While abstinence is the ideal for teens and preteens who are not ready for the emotional and physical impacts that occur when engaging in sexual intercourse, it is still a reality. There are students in Orlando schools having sex, just like their peers at every other school in this nation. If we know this to be true, then why not make sure they are educated and are being smart about their choice? "Sex Ed" begins in elementary Orlando schools; starting with the differences between "good touch" and "bad touch" , and lessons about not talking to strangers. The curriculum moves onto more complex areas as kids get older; in 5th grade girls and boys enrolled in Orlando schools attend separate lessons where they learn about the changes they can expect from their bodies, or which they may already be experiencing. Some kids just aren't going to get this information at home, and Orlando schools would be doing a disservice to the students by withholding it from them.

No matter what side of the fence you fall on in regards to the issues of the reality of kids having sex, it is definitely an issue that requires more discussion. Only after we are open and honest with ourselves as well as our students attending the Orlando schools will we be able to come to a conclusion that works. Hiding our heads in the sand - pulling an ostrich, if you will - will not get us anywhere; and in that time, more teens will be hitting the sack.
